NDIS Short Term Accommodation

Short Term Accommodation, or STA, is the formal NDIS term for what most people call respite: a temporary, supported stay away from a participant’s usual home, funded through the NDIS and ranging from a single night to a couple of weeks.

Humility Support Services provides STA across Brisbane, with support delivered by consistent, briefed staff wherever possible, not casual workers meeting a participant for the first time on arrival.

What NDIS Short Term Accommodation involves

How STA is different from other accommodation supports

STA is temporary by design, participants return to their usual home afterward. This is different from Supported Independent Living (SIL), an ongoing living arrangement, and different again from Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), which refers to the physical dwelling itself for participants with very high support needs.

Why familiar staff matter during an STA stay

Being away from home is already a change. We prioritise involving a participant’s existing support workers in STA stays wherever rostering allows, so it doesn’t feel like being handed to a stranger for the duration.

Funding Short Term Accommodation

STA is generally funded through Core Supports, with the NDIA allocating a set number of funded nights per year based on assessed need. Costs are charged within the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits, and we’ll confirm exactly what your plan allows before booking.

Problems Faced by NDIS Participants

Participants and families often confuse STA with SIL or SDA, leading to confusion about what’s actually being booked and what it costs against their plan. Being supported by unfamiliar staff during a stay can also undercut the value of an otherwise well-planned STA break.

How We Solve This & How Active We Are

We explain the difference between STA, SIL, and SDA clearly before booking anything, so there’s no confusion about what’s funded and how. We prioritise involving a participant’s existing support workers in STA stays wherever rostering allows, and our team is active across Brisbane and the surrounding southern and southwestern suburbs.

Frequently Asked Question

What's the difference between STA, SIL, and SDA?

STA is a temporary, supported stay. SIL is ongoing daily support for someone living in their own home. SDA is the specialist dwelling itself, funded separately for participants with very high support needs. They’re often confused but funded and used quite differently.

The number of funded nights is set individually in each participant’s plan based on assessed need. Your plan manager or support coordinator can confirm your specific allocation.

We prioritise involving a participant’s existing support workers wherever rostering allows, so the stay feels familiar rather than starting from scratch.

No. STA can also suit participants living independently who want a short, supported change of routine, not only those cared for by family.
