Specialist Disability Accommodation, usually shortened to SDA, is purpose-built or specially modified housing for NDIS participants with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. The building itself is one part of the picture. The support delivered inside it is what actually determines whether someone thrives there.
Humility Support Services provides the daily support for NDIS participants living in SDA housing across Brisbane, working alongside SDA dwelling providers to make sure the home and the support around it actually work together.
SDA funding pays for the dwelling, things like accessible design, robust construction, or specialist fit-outs. It’s funded separately from Core Supports and is only available to a small number of NDIS participants who meet strict eligibility criteria based on the extent of their functional impairment or support needs.
SDA is not the same as Supported Independent Living (SIL). SDA is about the building. SIL, and the daily support we provide, is about the person living in it.
A well-designed SDA home doesn’t automatically mean a good life inside it. Consistent, well-matched support staff make the difference between a house that’s simply accessible and a home where someone actually feels supported day to day.
We prioritise keeping the same support workers in place for participants living in SDA housing, since staff continuity matters even more once someone is living alongside their support team full time.
SDA suits a relatively small group of NDIS participants, generally those with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs, as assessed by the NDIA. If you’re unsure whether SDA applies to your situation, we can help you understand what your plan currently allows and who to speak with about an SDA assessment.
SDA funding itself covers the dwelling and is negotiated separately with the NDIA. The support delivered inside the home, personal care, daily living assistance, is generally funded through Core Supports or SIL funding, depending on your plan.
Participants often confuse SDA with SIL, leading to confusion about what their plan actually funds and frustration when a provider can’t deliver what they thought they were asking for. Support delivered inside SDA housing can also be inconsistent if the support provider and the dwelling provider aren’t properly coordinated with each other.
We explain the SDA/SIL distinction clearly before recommending anything, so participants understand exactly what they’re accessing. We coordinate directly with SDA dwelling providers on behalf of participants living in SDA housing across Brisbane, keeping the same support workers in place so the home and the support around it actually work together.
